National Volunteer month in the United States takes place in the month of April. Volunteering is still instilled at a young age within our country. Most organizations within our towns, counties and state would not function without volunteers. In many families, volunteerism is handed down for many generations.

Many fire and rescue departments remain staffed due to the efforts of volunteers. Although Frederick County has a combination system, meaning both career and volunteers staff our departments, the majority of department personnel are career. In 2023, our volunteer and career personnel answered 38,464 calls for emergency service, an average of 105 emergency responses per day.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes. They come with all different types of backgrounds and knowledge. They pick a cause to volunteer for because they want to make a difference in someone’s life. Some are small differences and others create major changes. Volunteers come to donate their time and resources most often to the efforts of a larger organization and their missions provide valuable support to communities in times of need.
