National Wildfire Awareness Month dedicates the month of May to prevent and preparedness.

Every year, on average, human-caused wildfires account for approximately 85% of wildfires in the United States according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Though most of these fires are caused by accidents, many of them can be prevented. Educate yourself on how you can prevent wildfires and mitigate the impacts of wildfires on your community.

Preventable wildfires threaten lives, property, and our precious natural resources. Whether it is properly extinguishing a campfire or keeping your vehicle maintained to prevent sparks.

Wildfire can burn almost anywhere on the landscape. It can move quickly through open grassy meadows and creep up steep, Rocky Mountains. Wind can drive fire in many different directions and dramatically affect wildfire behavior. A wildfire is capable of jumping rivers and roads and can cross any boundary; natural or manmade. It can cross state lines, agency boundaries and even burn from one country to another.

The public plays a valuable role in preventing wildfires. We can all help make the world a safer place by learning more about how and why wildfires start.

To prevent forest fires near Frederick, MD, individuals can take several precautions including checking weather conditions and drought levels, avoiding activities that involve fire or sparks in dry, windy conditions, and maintaining equipment properly. Additionally, ensuring clearings around homes, burning debris safely, and using fire-resistant materials for home construction can reduce the risk of wildfires.
