National Stand Down Week is an annual opportunity for fire and emergency services to pause non emergency activities and refocus on safety, training, and wellness. The 2026 theme, “Firefighter FITNESS: Fit to Serve, Fit for Life,” highlights the importance of physical readiness and long term health in sustaining strong volunteer teams.

This focus on safety and wellness directly supports today’s recruitment and retention efforts. Younger generations want to volunteer in organizations that prioritize their well being, offer meaningful training, and show a commitment to continuous improvement. Stand Down Week demonstrates exactly that—creating space for learning, team connection, and renewal.

By embracing this week, departments send a clear message:
We value our volunteers, we invest in their safety, and we are committed to building a healthier, more resilient fire service for the future.
